Wylie bass still busting topwater lures

Guide Eric Weir shows that buzzbaits have been very effective on Lake Wylie in recent days.

Is lack of oxygen deep pushing them up?

You might think that in the middle of sweltering, 90-degree days, you could just about give up on a shallow-water bite for largemouth bass.

Eric Weir of Big E’s Guide Service on Lake Wylie would tell you that you’re wrong.

“I think what’s happened is, as hot as it’s gotten, the oxygen has gotten bad in the deeper water, and the fish have stayed up,” said Weir (704-860-0356). “And it’s getting to be time for the lake to turn over anyway.”

Weir said that topwater fishing has been extremely good over the past 10 days. His best five fish one day this past week weighed 20 pounds, and most of them came on a buzzbait and a Zara Spook.

“I caught most of my topwater fish early, say, between 5:30 and 9,” said Weir. “Then I moved out and fished a jig on long, tapering points, and around boat docks.

“It looks like the fish have moved about halfway back in the creeiks, and I was catching them on topwater on secondary points, and around stumps and rocks.”

“The only drawback is that you can’t get in a lot of places. The only ramps I know that were open this week were one ramp at Buster Boyd and Ebenezer.”

Wylie has been more than five feet below full pool because of this summer’s long drought.
