Trolling with Alabama rigs on lower end of lake producing great catches of bass
Striper fishermen are catching a lot of fish on Lake Greenwood lately – just not the fish they’re targeting.
Tom Mundy of Fish Stalker Lures said that striper fishermen trolling Alabama rigs on the lower end of the lake aren’t catching any stripers – but they’re running into a lot of big largemouth bass.
“The striper guys have been trolling Alabama rigs down here by the dam,” said Mundy, “but the reports I’m getting back is they aren’t doing much with the stripers.
“The striper bite has really been off, I don’t know if it’s because the water hasn’t cooled off enough yet, but these guys are catching toads – I’m talking 6-, 7-, (and) 8-pound largemouth,” said Mundy. “I guess the largemouth have moved in since the stripers aren’t there.”
Most of the action is taking place from the second railroad trestle downstream to Greenwood Dam, on the main lake. Mundy said the troll-em-up bass bite has been good since before Christmas, with fishermen using his Pro Spin Shad baits on the Alabama Rigs.
Once the word got out, Mundy began steering his bass-fishing customers to the lower lake of Greenwood and has since gotten back reports of their success on the largemouth at the dam.
“The largemouth bass guys are catching good fish too, off the long points and in nearby creek channels in 16 to 20 feet of water,” said Mundy. “The secret to catching these fish is slow-rolling a single, half-ounce bait off the ends of the points or parallel to the drop into the creek.”
