Keowee spotted bass are on the feed

Spotted bass on Lake Keowee have cranked up their feeding activity already, hitting off points, around ledges and under docks.

Spring in the upstate is still a month away, but bass fishing on Lake Keowee is starting to really pick up, according to Capt. Chris Shuber of Fishboy Adventures Guide Service in Walhalla.

“The spotted bass have really been biting, and the No. 1 lure has been a Shaky Head worm,” said Shuber (864-888-7974). “We’ve been catching them in 15 to 35 feet of water, flipping them off ledges, around points and under boat docks.

“Most of our fish are coming from Mile Creek, around Gap Hill Landing,” he said. “The fish are about halfway from the mouth to the very back of the creeks.”

Shuber said that watermelon seed had been the best color; he’s been rigging a 4-inch Zoom trick worm on a 1/8th-ounce Shaky Head. Deeper fish have been on a split-shot rig, and a few largemouth bass have been caught closer to the surface on a jerkbait.

“The majority of the fish we’ve been catching have been spots, but there have been some largemouth on a jerkbait,” he said. “We’ve been doing the best on a Rattlin’ Rogue in black/silver, with red spots on each side.

“Another bait we’re just really starting to fish that’s doing well is a Shaky Head jig. When it hits the bottom, it rests on the jighead so that the worm sticks straight up. We’re starting to catch ‘em on that one.”
