Keowee bass action is percolating

Topwater bite kicks off excellent fishing

It’s mid-July, a time when bass fishing isn’t supposed to be as hot as the weather, but at Lake Keowee, that’s been the case.

Gerald Foster at Fishin’ Hole Bait & Tackle in Seneca said bass fishermen have been getting good results on two distinctly different but familiar patterns – early-morning topwater mid-day Carolina-rigging around points.

“It doesn’t last long – maybe the first hour-and-a-half after daylight – but  they’ve been catching them on topwater baits,” said Foster (864-654-9315). “There’s been some schooling action, and they’ve been calling some up.”

Foster said that big baits such as Zoom Super Flukes, Zara Spooks and Sammys have been providing most of the topwater action.

The rest of the day, it’s been a matter of dragging big worms like a Zoom Mag 2 on main-lake points.

“The bass are moving out and settling on the ends of points right next to the river channel,” Foster said. “This time of year, you need a little bit bigger worm, and green pumpkin has been our No. 1 seller.”
