How does Wylie compare?

Brian Porter admires a nice Lake Wylie bass, typical of the 14- to 16-inch fish that make up the largest part of the fishery.

Brian McRae, a fisheries biologist with the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission said Lake Wylie’s largemouth bass fishery compares favorably with some of North Carolina’s other best bass fisheries.

“In general, I think Lake Wylie offers the angler ample opportunities to catch fish between 14 and 16 inches, with a decent chance for catching larger fish, too,” he said. “The fish in Wylie appear to be fairly average in terms of their condition or plumpness, so I would not expect too many ‘butterballs.’

“High Rock Lake probably offers similar opportunities as Lake Wylie in terms of fish between 14 and 16 inches and the plumpness of the fish; however, I expect High Rock to have more fish greater than 16 inches.

“On the flip side would be Jordan Lake and Shearon Harris Lake. Fewer fish can be expected to be captured at Jordan and Shearon Harris; however, a greater potential exists to capture fish in very good condition that are greater than 16 inches. And at Shearon Harris, anglers have a real opportunity to catch the 24- and 25-inch fish.”
