Wasted Time takes lead in 2017 S.C. Wahoo Series
Team Hooked Soul’s Capt. Danny Carey was trolling on March 29 as part of the 2017 S.C. Wahoo Series when he hooked a big one. Big enough, in fact, to take the lead in the tournament, which lasts through April 16.
Carey, piloting the boat Wasted Time, put his crew on two good fish, taking the lead in the Wahoo division with a 100.5-pound stud, and also in the tuna tournament-within-a-tournament category with a 29.6-pound blackfin. Angler Wally Lee reeled in the wahoo, which gave him the lead in the Senior Angler Division.
The S.C. Wahoo Series is a unique tournament, lasting more than four months, but allowing each boat to fish only a maximum of two days. This year’s competition began on Feb. 3 and ends on April 16. Teams can fish from the inlet boundaries of St. Simons Island, Ga to Murrells Inlet, S.C.
One-hundred and fourteen boats are participating in this year’s event. Carey and his crew were fishing on their first day of the event, and couldn’t have picked a better one. Two days earlier, the crew of Hay Fever put themselves atop the leaderboard, if ever so briefly, with a 97.9-pound wahoo. Then on March 28, Team Yellowfin Only boated an 82.8-pounder. Several fish between 40 and 65 pounds were caught within a few days of Wasted Time’s big catch.
Jessica Teague, fishing aboard Flash Point is the current leader in the Lady Angler division with a 50.5-pound wahoo that was boated on the same day that Wasted Time caught their 100 pounder. Audrey Cooper’s 52.1-pound wahoo has her on top of the Youth Division.
