Sam Seamster’s 11-point non-typical buck

I killed this 11-point non-typical buck in Caswell County on Nov. 8, 2020. The left side of the deer’s rack splits off into two different beams. He also has several kickers coming off the main beams.

I was hunting the same blind where I killed my previous deer. The blind is located on an oak ridge right next to a good funnel area. I have gotten this deer on trail camera on several occasions.

This buck was coming by the stand mainly in the mornings, but most times, it was just before legal shooting light. After studying the trail cam photos, I noticed that on foggy mornings he came by much later, after daylight. I assume since it was foggy, he felt safer.

After killing the first buck from this stand, I didn’t hunt here for a week and wanted to wait until conditions were right before I returned. On Nov. 8, I felt it was the right time.

The movement period was peaking at daylight, and the damp and rainy conditions were ripe to produce some fog. I actually told my son I was going to kill that deer the night before. I went to the stand that morning at 5 a.m., very early. I wanted to make sure I got there before the deer came to the ridge or heading through the funnel area.

The fog was light that morning, and as the woods began to get light, I sat and watched through the fog for movement. The old buck appeared like a ghost out of the fog. I never heard him. I just saw him appear out in the woods about 40 yards away, broadside.

I brought the muzzleloader up and on point and pulled the trigger. I could tell the deer was hit hard by the way he ran off. I waited about 15 minutes before pursuing a blood trail. The deer ran about 100 yards. I was so excited to take this non-typical buck.

I have one deer mounted with a short drop tine, but this is the best non-typical I have ever taken. I ddi film the hunt for my YouTube channel, but because it was so foggy, you can’t see the deer when I took the shot.
