Kate does it again!

9-year-old Kate Morton bags another turkey this year during the youth day hunt.

3/26 – York County, SC

Me and my Daughter Kate Morton hunted the opening youth day in Game Zone 2 without any luck. There were some storms and wind that opening day and we just couldn’t hear or find any willing gobblers that day.

On the second morning I thought it was going to be much of the same. The morning started out with some rain and thunderstorms just before sunrise and much like the morning before we hadn’t heard or found any turkeys. My daughter was getting bored and I know better than to push the limits. I want her to keep coming back so I am not going to push her to sit for hours on end with no action. Luckily for us just as we were talking about leaving for the morning I made one last call and we got a gobble. I made a few more calls and he responded each time. I could tell he was coming.

My daughter was so nervous. This was her first time hunting with shotgun. Last year she killed her first turkey with a crossbow which is even more impressive to me. She wanted to use a gun this year and she had been practicing with her new .410, so I knew she could do it. She just needed to wait for the right shot. This was also her first time hearing a turkey gobble, and boy was this guys putting on a show. He was gobbling his head off on the way into us which made the whole situation even more intense and exciting.

As the turkey made his way into the field my daughter was ready. She had the gun on him and as soon as he stuck his head up she let him have it. The turkey dropped in his tracks and went to flopping. She made the perfect shot and this made for the perfect daddy daughter hunt. It wasn’t the biggest bird in the woods we hunted, but it was a trophy nonetheless. 18lbs, 5.5″-6″ double beards. It will be a hunt together that we will never forget and that is what it’s all about!
