Big Gobbler – First Youth Day on 9th Birthday

turkey

I bought my son, Smith Andrews Jr., a .410 shotgun as an early 9th birthday gift. He loves to go hunting with me and this spring, our goal was to get him his first turkey. He practiced target shooting leading up to Youth Season. We woke up early and left Raleigh at 5 a.m. to get to the farm we were hunting in Nash County. We had never hunt this property before.

When we arrived, we heard some gobbles in a big patch of woods so we set off. By 6:30 we were setup on a clearing deep in the woods near where we thought the gobbler was roosted. We called and he responded…YES, we are in the game. We saw him fly off the roost at 7:03 a.m. He went silent…15 minutes later we see something to our right, there he is.

One soft call and he locked in. My son got his .410 up. Tom walked in to approach our decoy…BOOM. Little Smith got ’em at 20 yards at 7:15 a.m.! First Youth day turkey hunt with my son on his 9th birthday. Memory of a Lifetime made. Old bird – 10+in beard with a nice set of spurs!
