Zack Satterfield drills Rockingham County hammer

Rockingham County

Rockingham County buck was on Satterfield’s hit list

Zack Satterfield of Reidsville, NC arrowed a Rockingham County hammer of a buck on Sept. 7, 2024. The 9-point mainframe buck was 15 yards away when Satterfield released his arrow from an elevated hang-on stand.

The hunter had a 3-year history with the big buck. His trail cameras picked up photos of the big buck during that timeframe. Then, last season, he saw the buck numerous times while hunting, but decided not to shoot the deer on any of those occasions.

“I saw the deer multiple times last year, but let him go one more year to mature more,” he said.

He knew this season would be a great year to harvest the buck after seeing its antler growth since this past summer.

“He blew up this year compared to the last couple of years,” he said. “I’d been watching him all summer.”

He got in the woods in the afternoon, and had been sitting in the stand for several hours when the buck showed up.

“I got in my stand at 4:30 p.m. and started seeing deer about 6. At 7:30, I saw him coming through the woods, taking his time eating acorns,” he said.

And shortly after that, the buck was in range.

“At 7:40, he presented me a slightly quartering-away shot at 15 yards,” he said. “I shot him and he bolted off.”

Satterfield knew he’d hit the deer, but wasn’t sure how easy it would be to find it.

“I heard him crash, but couldn’t see where he went down,” he said. “I called my dad and my friend Brandon after I shot him. They came to help me retrieve the buck. We tracked about 70 yards before finding him.”
