Chesterfield County birthday buck was a 10-pointer

Daniel Nicholson of Pageland, S.C. celebrated his birthday by killing a trophy buck in full velvet on Sept. 3, 2022.

The young hunter killed the 10-point birthday buck at about 6 p.m. in Chesterfield County while hunting from an elevated stand overlooking an open area. He shot the deer from 40 yards away with a Mossberg .308. It was his first time seeing the deer in the flesh, but he had seen trail camera photos of it leading up to the hunt.

After Nicholson shot the buck, it ran about 30 yards before falling over.

Before the hunt, Nicholson didn’t know if he’d ever like to kill a deer in velvet, but once he saw the deer, he knew he wanted to pull the trigger.

“He wasn’t sure about killing a deer in velvet, but just couldn’t pass up the perfect 10-point in full velvet! What a perfect way to celebrate his birthday weekend!” said Nicholson’s mom.
