8-point velvet buck showed up on evening hunt

Hunting in Orangeburg County on South Carolina’s Youth Day of Aug. 10, 2024, 17-year-old Tucker Hauser killed an 8-point buck velvet buck. He shot the buck with a .308 Mossberg from a ground blind 67 yards away around 7 p.m. It was a deer he had a little bit of history with.

Hauser tried hunting that morning, but had no luck. As a 17-year-old, he knew it was his last chance at participating in Youth Day as a hunter.

“I went to hunt with my buddy in Orangeburg on the last youth day I’ll be able to hunt,” he said. “We didn’t see much on the morning hunt, so we went back to the house and came back to hunt the afternoon.”

Right away, this hunt looked to be more promising than the morning outing.

“I got in my blind at around 5 p.m. and immediately had a doe come in,” he said. “She stayed for about 45 minutes and then walked off.”

But that wasn’t the end of activity for Hauser’s hunt.

“Then at 6:45, I had a group of bucks come in,” he said. “I had to wait for around 15 minutes for my buck to come out from behind the tree, but when he did, I shot him at 67 yards with a 150-grain Accubond. He didn’t go 25 yards and piled up.”
