Tommy Rominger of Germanton, NC killed a 9-point buck in full velvet in the early part of North Carolina’s 2024 season. He shot the buck with his Mathews bow from 30 yards away while in a tree stand 25 feet high.
Rominger had a history with the deer, both their personal encounters and through trail camera photos.
The buck ran 70 yards to a creek bank before expiring.
“I had my eye on him for a couple years now between him and a 10-point,” said Rominger. “The 10-point would have scored a little bit more, but I’ve never killed one in full velvet. So when both of them come in at the same time, it was a hard decision to make, but I wanted a full velvet buck. Plus, I have two 9-point bucks that made Pope and Young, so now hopefully I will have a third just in full velvet. If there are not a lot of deductions, I think he will gross fine but netting is a different story.”
