Orangeburg County 8-point buck dropped on the spot

Shannon Mattson of Round O, SC killed an Orangeburg County 8-point buck on the evening of Aug. 25, 2024. She shot the buck from 94 yards away with a .30-06 while in an elevated stand. It was a nice surprise for Mattson, who has had plenty of hunting success over the years, but hadn’t killed a really nice buck in some time.

“It’s been about 5 years since I have killed a decent buck,” she said. “So I guess my expectations were low.”

She had been seeing the deer on her trail camera, but didn’t expect it would show up during shooting light.

“I thought, there’s no way this deer will come out in the light for me to have an opportunity, but he definitely did!” she said.

When she pulled the trigger, the buck fell immediately.
