It’s her first ever deer
Sarah Thompson of Florence, SC killed an 8-point buck in Darlington County on Aug. 10, 2024 at 6:30 a.m. The 13-year-old killed the deer with a 90-yard shot from a 7mm-08 Mossberg. while sitting in an elevated stand. The deer, her first ever, weighed 165 pounds.
Sarah comes from a hunting family. Growing up she’s watched her great grandfather, grandfather, uncle, mother, & father go hunting. Sarah has unfortunately not been handed the best cards in life. At 5 years old, her mother passed away. At 11 years old, she lost her father in an ATV accident. She was able to sit in a few hunts with her father before he passed but they were not able to harvest anything. Sarah was adopted by her step-mom shortly after her dad passed away. Her mom met another hunting man. Last season she wasn’t too interested in hunting. This year, she decided she would go with her (adoptive) mom’s boyfriend, John Howle, for youth day. The night before John told her she better ask God and her daddy to send her a buck. Being a teenager, she was not happy about waking up at 4 am. She did though. John and Sarah left the house at 4:40 am. They got about a mile down the road and it started to thunderstorm. They decided they would still go try to hunt. They got to John’s deer stand and it was still thundering and lightning. They almost turned around but decided they would wait it out in the truck. They climbed in the deer stand at 6:00 am. They saw 2 bucks on the corn pile. At 6:38 they were calling Sarah’s mom, Anna. They said she shot and hit but the deer ran. They went looking for the deer. John said each deer ran opposite ways. John walked to an old logging path and found the deer. Sure enough, her daddy was looking out for her and sent her a buck she’ll always remember.
