8-point buck showed up early, came back late
Morgan Acord of Aiken, SC was hunting in her home county on Aug. 15, 2024 when she killed an 8-point buck in full velvet with a 53-yard shot from an elevated stand. She shot the deer with a Winchester .308 at about 8:53 p.m. It was not a deer she had ever seen before, either in the flesh or through trail camera photos, so it was a nice Opening Day surprise for her.
The deer showed up within minutes after Acord getting in the stand, but it disappeared just as quickly. Luckily, it decided to come back with just enough light left for her to connect.
“This deer came out 15 minutes into my hunt (first day of the season). He was spooked by a doe and ran off before I could get a shot,” she said.
An unfavorable wind gave her doubts that the buck would return.
“The wind shifted for the rest of the night, and I knew there was no way he’d come back. At the very last minute of daylight, he came back out and I was able to get a perfect shot. He ran just to the right of my stand, and I heard him drop,” she said.
