Marti Morris kills Lowcountry buck

Lowcountry buck was elusive for her boyfriend

Marti Morris of Charleston, SC killed an 8-point buck in her home county during an evening hunt in September 2024. It was a deer she had some history with, through in-the-flesh encounters as well as trail camera photos.

“My boyfriend and I walked up on him 2 weeks prior before getting in the stand, and he shot and missed. Since then, I made it my goal to get him,” said Morris.

The deer stopped showing up on the camera for a few days, but came back.

“So, obviously, we sat Monday and nothing. Then we went back Tuesday evening,” she said.

Morris took a look through the scope just to check out the scene. She didn’t see a deer, but she saw something else that encouraged her.

“My dad passed away in 2002, and he was a big hunter. I always associate cardinals with him being present,” she said. “I looked in the scope just to check things out and saw about 10 red cardinals on the corn pile, and I just got a gut feeling.”

Magical moment

Half an hour later, Morris checked through the scope again.

”I looked through the scope to make sure I could still see, since it was getting dark,” she said. “The buck just started walking out slowly.”

She whispered the news to her boyfriend, placed the crosshairs on the back of the buck’s shoulder, and pulled the trigger.

”I was shaking with excitement because I felt good about the shot. But I had never shot at a deer before, so I wasn’t really sure how I did,” she said.

The two got out of the stand to look for blood. They didn’t see any at first, but eventually found some.

”We started tracking it in the dark, and we finally found him about 45 minutes later,” she said.

Finding the buck brought a smile to her face.

”I was a magical moment for sure,” she said.
