Morning

I had been hunting this buck for several years now. He had never been seen during daylight during season. He would normally disappear when rut starts and return later in the season. Well Friday the 13th he finally exposed himself and gave me a chance. It was around 7:05 am. A large buck stepped out on an old logging road that I was on. I estimated him to be about 150yards or so away. I wasn’t for sure it was him and I didn’t really take the time to evaluate this deer but I knew it was large! As my cross hairs came up on him I knew it very well could be “big boy” because of his size and rack height. Man alot of emotions hit me all at once.. excitement, joy and fear I may miss.. I’ve put a lot of work over the years into this one deer. Hours of scouting, moving cameras around , moving stands and trying be pattern him. He always seemed to be one step ahead of me. I’ve never been one to shake much when I see a deer but on this occasion I was shook lol.. I took a deep breath a put crosshairs on his shoulder and let it rip. He took off into the woods. At tha moment My heart skipped a few beats. Did I just miss and ruin my one and only chance ?? I tried to wait in stand for atleast 30 minutes but just couldn’t do it. After maybe 15 minutes I got down and walked to where he was standing. I saw the dig in the dirt he made but no hair or blood. Panic was setting in. Oh no!!! I entered the woods where he went in and immediately I saw the Large body up against a tree. He went maybe 30 yards. He was down!!! I knew right away it was “big boy”. I’m a pretty calm guy and to say I was ecstatic is an understatement! Now I think I’m trembling more than before the shot. A friend of mine came and helped me drag him to the truck and load him. This deer was heavy!! When I got him to the processor they told me this was the largest deer to ever come in. This mule weighed 241 lbs. His rack had an outside spread of 20 1/2. My taxidermist green scored him at 142 and aged him at 5 1/2 yrs old. This deer was by far my largest and most special deer I’ve ever harvested . I am so blessed!
