Last-minute, early-season brute

Abigail Anderson
Cheraw, SC (also where deer was killed)

Abigail is 9-years-old and had been asking her dad to teach her to shoot and take her hunting for quite a while. The 2023 youth deer hunt was listed on DNR website as August 13, so they decided to shoot some on the 12th and then shoot some more during the day on the 13th before hitting the woods that evening.

But on the evening of August 11, they realized that DNR website had the wrong date and that the hunt was going to be on the 12th. They had very little time to put this thing together. They practiced during the heat of the day on the 12th, first starting with a .22 rifle then moving to a CVA Cascade in 350 Legend. Abigail was a natural! She didn’t mind the recoil and shot great groups at 100 yards, so they decided to hit the woods.

They got all their stuff together and headed to the stand. First thing they had to do was wrap some camo cloth around the Game Winner 2-man ladder stand because her dad and uncle had just set it up (with help from her and her cousins) a couple of weeks earlier, and hadn’t gotten around to wrapping the cloth. They got set-up in the stand at 7 p.m. and had the cloth wrapped in just a few short minutes, just in time for the first deer of the evening to step out!

Several does came out and fed around in the overgrown field with bush-hogged shooting lanes while they were hunting. Just a few minutes after 8 p.m., a group of the three bucks stepped out of the woods at about 100 yards. They could see that one was very nice and decided immediately to take him.

Abigail got her rifle up and found the buck in her scope. She gasped when she got a look at the buck through the scope, but she remained calm enough to make a great shot. They recovered the buck, which had run about 50 yards, with help from her uncle and cousin who were also out hunting nearby. The buck was an old, mature 9-point with two stickers at the base of his massive, full velvet antlers. Next came a photoshoot and the rest is history!
