Kate’s 8

1/6/2024 – Youth Day 5pm

My 10yr old daughter Kate had been putting time in the woods all season. She had let several small bucks walk this season with hopes of getting decent buck. This was her choice. I told her she could harvest whatever deer made her happy but since she has killed a smaller buck in the past seasons she was holding out for larger racked buck. Without any encounters with a decent buck all season it came down the wire. Literately the last day and hour of the season on youth day. We had two set ups we could hunt this afternoon after the rain but based on the wind we could only hunt the one blind. Turns out that was a good thing. After only seeing 6 gobblers so far that afternoon we were playing on the phone just passing the time when things happened. I just happened to look up from the phone and noticed a small buck on the corn pile. No clue where he came from but at that same moment the 8pt rounded corner to join him. I quickly told her to get read as I reached up to take the gun off of safety, but I let it slip. Click! Both bucks looked right at us. I thought at this moment I had messed it up for her after putting in all this time to get her on a good buck. Luckily for us the deer settled back down and went back to feeding. She quickly got on the deer and before I could even get the deer on my camera she had pulled the trigger. Just like that her season was over and everything she had done all season paid off. It was a little 8 with a small drop tine. Pretty cool for her first racked buck. I couldn’t have been more proud of her.
