5 year olds first deer!!!
On the afternoon of 10/30 I was planning to go hunt a piece of lease property that I have yet to hunt this year. As I was gathering all of my gear something told me I needed to change my plan and take Jameson(my son the 5yr old) to our family farm and try and get him on this buck I’ve been seeing on camera late in the afternoons just before dark. I make contact with my mother in law and inform her I will be stopping by to pick Jameson up to go hunt with me this afternoon. He was super excited when I arrived as he had no idea we were planning to hunt today bc my original plan was to hunt another location by myself. We arrived at our farm 430pm get our clothes changed load up the rest of our gear into the gator and head to the “redneck stand” ( its the Redneck Blind). Jameson has yet to harvest a deer after several hunts but he has killed two wild hogs so far first one when in February of this year when he was still four years old and the second one just a month ago. He’s had lots of range time shooting I’m very confident in his shooting ability to be so young. Once we arrive at the stand (right at 5pm) there’s 6 hogs on the corn/ sweet potato pile. We get into the stand and settled in I ask Jameson if he wanted to shoot one and he quickly replies no daddy I want to shoot a buck, which is what I was hoping for but if he wanted to shoot another hog I would have 100% let him. As we’re watching the 6 hogs feed he ask for his water, snack and his tablet. I tell him he can have his tablet but the volume must stay all the way down bc we don’t want to risk scaring any deer away. As I’m typing in the pass code for his tablet I glance up and see a deer coming across the foodplot heading directly towards the corn pile. Although his horns were very easy to see I picked up my binos to get a better look at which buck this is. Instantly knew it was the one I wanted him to kill. With the rifle locked into the Bog tripod Jameson gets in my lap to get setup and take the shot. As he’s getting situated I’m talking to him in his ear saying remember where to aim
Buddy and make sure you breathe breathe breathe. With the deer quartered towards us I tell him to wait until he’s perfectly broadside. Once he makes a slight turn I tell him okay now get on his shoulder buddy let me know when your ready. He instantly replies I’m on it daddy. I tell him safety is off buddy breathe and squeeze the trigger when your ready. Boom. Deer drops directly to the ground. The excitement and celebration is something me and him will never forget. Truly remarkable this happened considering I wasn’t even planning on hunting our farm then at the last minute I decided to take my son and try and get him his first deer that hasn’t even showed his face but just a few times. Awesome experience!!
