Evening

My birthday is on November 7, and I took some time off from work to hunt that week a few days in hopes of getting a deer for my birthday. Tuesday, November 5, was my second hunt that week a first hunt in the afternoon. I had done some scouting and found 4 scrapes and at least 5 rubs on an old logging road at the top of the ridge next to an old overgrown rice field before the hunt. I was very excited to be going into a good area that I knew bucks were using for the rut. It was a warm evening and the wind was blowing SE. I climbed up a tree on the edge of the rice field and hardwood ridge about 4:15pm. Once I was settled I got my camera setup and just waited for action to start it was about 4:30 then. Around 5pm I turned around and saw some bushes and little pine trees just shaking about 120 yards away from me. I got my binoculars out to see what it was but the brush was too thick. Then the deer started to come my way and I got a good look at him and knew he was a mature buck. He started coming straight towards me and on a trail towards the rubs and scrapes. I got my camera setup for the shot and he came in perfectly for a 24 yard shot. I gave him “meh” call to stop him drew back and shot him in the gut because I was so excited. Fortunately he didn’t really know what happened and the Lord gave me another chance at 39 yards. This time I collected myself settled the pin on his lower body just below his vital V area to anticipate the drop. I let the arrow fly and it drilled him perfectly with the “thwack” sound and I knew he was done. This was about 5:10pm when I shot, and I waited about 30 minutes to go track him. Once I got down, collected my arrows I was able to track him and he only went 20 yards. When I got down to him I realized he was a 10pt, and not a big 8t like I thought. I had never even seen a 10pt buck in person, much less killed one. This is the biggest buck I have ever killed and my first compound bow buck. It was an incredible hunt and early birthday present. It was such a blessing to experience and the Lord really blessed me with him. All the glory to God!
