10-point buck dropped on the spot
Josh Harris of Nixville, SC killed a 10-point buck in Hampton County on Aug. 25, 2024 during an exciting evening hunt near his house. To make the hunt even more special, his girlfriend was in the elevated box stand with him.
Harris shot the buck from 303 yards away with a .300 Remington Ultra Mag. The deer dropped on the spot.
He had a bit of a history with this buck. His trail camera took one picture of the buck last season. He hunted it hard, but never was able to see it during a hunt.
“I decided last minute that I wanted to go hunting, so me and my girlfriend climbed up in the stand in the backyard at about 7:35 p.m., and figured we would sit there until dark,” he said.
Immediate action
“About 5 minutes into the hunt, we saw two small bucks playing around about 500 yards in the clear cut,” he said.
Harris wasn’t interested in shooting either of those bucks, but just a few minutes later, something else caught his attention.
“We watched them for about 15 minutes, and out of the corner of my eye, I saw this bruiser walk out broadside to us at 303 yards,” he said.
Harris wasted no time.
“In the time it took to put my gun out the window and take it off safety, the buck had now turned and was quartering towards us,” he said.
With the crosshairs of his rifle scope slightly in front of the deer’s front shoulder, Harris aimed for the most ethical shot, and squeezed the trigger. Right away, it was apparent the bullet had found its mark.
“Immediately upon impact, he cut a back flip,” said Harris. “I don’t know who was more excited, me or my girlfriend. We were both shaking so bad, we had to collect ourselves before climbing down. To be able to harvest the deer I chased all last season, while being the first successful hunt my girlfriend witnessed, is a memory I will never forget.”
