Durham County 9-point buck

We’ve had this buck on camera most of the year. He hasn’t been out much in daylight until recently.

About a week ago he came out one night in daylight when the stand was empty. We sat the next 3 nights and didn’t see him again. Last night he came out in light at 5:15, again with the stand empty.

I went today and got in around 3 p.m. Around 4:40 a little doe we often see came out and started eating acorns. She kept looking back into the woods so I knew something was behind her, be it more does or a buck.

About 10 minutes later a young, wide 6-pointer came out and pushed her off the acorns to our corn pile. The 6-pointer had a 3-pointer and spike in tow. I started feeling a little confident at this point because I had seen the target buck running with the spike some.

A couple of minutes later more regulars, a doe with her two fawns came out. All deer were within 40 yards of me. I was trying to keep my eye on all of them and noticed the target standing there in the corner of my eye looking at all of the other deer. He stood there a moment observing, then came rushing in, pushing the others off the acorns, then going to the corn pushing the rest off there. He was partially shielded by a tree, but was positioned so front shoulder and right behind was readily available.

I put the crosshairs on him and shot. He fell and died right where I shot him, so no tracking. Had to drag him 1/2 – 3/4 of a mile through the woods back to the truck.

Buck was shot on private land in Durham County. Buck was shot from a tree stand with a .30-06 150-grain bullet. I didn’t remember to note the exact time he was shot but it was around sunset. 5 p.m. Maybe a little before.
