11-point buck weighed 190 pounds
Hunter Holsey of Harleyville, SC killed an 11-point buck in Dorchester County on Aug. 21, 2024. The trophy buck weighed 190 pounds and was in full velvet.
Holsey was hunting from an elevated stand when he shot the buck from 150 yards away. The deer dropped immediately. He had no knowledge of the buck prior to this hunt, which took place in the evening.
“Me and a good buddy decided to go sit after work, so we rushed to the stand,” Holsey said. “Before we could even make it to the stand, we already had 5 smaller bucks in the field.”
They didn’t want to alert the deer to their presence, so they got creative.
“So we army crawled on our stomachs to make it to the stand,” he said.
The tactic worked
“Once we made it in the stand, we realized that we didn’t scare any of the deer off,” said Holsey.
Deer continued to come into the field.
“As it got closer to late evening,” he said, “we had about 18 different bucks and 10 does in the field.”
One of the bucks stood out to the two hunters.
“We noticed a very large 8-point across the field where we came in, so we decided to try and take him,” he said.
But the buck didn’t offer him an easy shot.
“As I got lined up on the shot, he laid down out of sight,” he said. “So we started checking all the different bucks and decided he was the biggest.”
Holsey decided to wait it out, and after a little while, the buck finally stood back up.
“So I took my time and took the shot at about 150 yards. He dropped out of sight. We waited about 20 minutes and went looking for him and then we finally got our hands on him,” he said. “It was definitely my best still hunt ever, and my biggest buck to date.”
