My name is Charles Bess, a lifelong resident of Iredell County, N.C. I headed out Saturday morning Nov. 27 on just a typical morning hunt as usual. After seeing nine does and two small bucks, I caught a glimpse of what appeared to be the typical shooter buck in my area.
After the glimpse and knowing the direction it had went, I was sure my hunt was over. And at 9:30 a.m. I saw a flicker. Once I realized it was a deer and noticeably a nice buck, I began planning my shot. Once the deer entered an opening, stopping, and presenting a shot, I took my opportunity. I watched the deer disappear into thick cover. I climbed down and made my way to my truck.
After 30 min had passed I began the recovery. Upon finding the deer I also found that I had killed what to me was the unimaginable. I had no idea of his existence and in the event of things, I had not fully focused on the size of the deer. I have harvested a few respectable deer in my life but nothing to this caliber.
