Evening

I’ve had this deer on camera behind my house for the past 2 years. Last year he was an old wide 6pt bruiser of a buck. I never had the chance to see him during shooting light last year so my only encounters were of him standing in front of my camera either while I was at work or well after dark. Fast forward to this summer and he was a regular on my camera for the entirety of the time that I began putting out nutrients. A few days before the season he disappeared completely leaving me to believe he had moved on from his summer pattern and went to another property. On the afternoon of 9/17 I was undecided on hunting or not due to the off and on rain we had been having. Eventually I talked my self into going and began seeing deer as soon as I got into my box stand. Around an hour before last light I made the choice to live over to my climber since the rain had stopped and it would be a more suitable wind for where I expected the deer to come from. Around 15 minutes before last light I caught movement coming through the cutover and as soon as I got the deer into my binoculars I knew exactly which deer it was, at that point I began preparing myself for the shot and praying that he would get into range before it was too dark to see through my peep site. After what seemed like an hour (roughly 5 minutes) I was able to settle my pins on this buck at 23yds and squeeze off a shot. It sounded like a baseball bat hitting a steel drum and the buck took off in obvious distress from the shot. I gave it 30 minutes and then myself and my father began the track that only took us 75yds to this old warrior. I am thankful to have harvested such an animal and am even more thankful to have had the chance to hunt him these past 2 years.
