Berkeley County hunter doubles up

Berkeley County

Hunter killed Berkeley County 10 and 7

John Williamson killed his hit list buck, a 10-pointer in velvet, along with a bonus 7-pointer on Sept. 5, 2023 during an evening hunt in Berkeley County, SC.

He’d been watching the 10-point buck for quite some time.

“My 12-year-old son and I have been chasing the 10-point for 2 years now,” he said.

But that wasn’t the first buck he saw during this hunt.

“I saw the 7-point first, and he wouldn’t give me a shot. He was behind some dog fennel and pine saplings,” he said.

After some time, Williamson was able to see the deer again. But he also saw a different deer. And it was the buck he’d been targeting.

“I put the gun down until I could see the 7 again. I put the scope back on him, and that’s when I saw the 10-point,” he said.

But, he didn’t have a clean shot at either deer.

“I couldn’t get a shot on either one. So I put the gun back down, and I thought the deer left,” he said.

When he least expected it, the big buck showed himself again. Williamson didn’t waste any time pulling the trigger on it.

“About that time, the 10-point stepped out. I took the shot. But I didn’t see him run off or fall. I felt bad about the shot placement,” he said.

He removed his ear plugs to see if he could hear the buck crash, and he racked another shell into his .30-06 Browning A-Bolt.

“Then I saw the 7-point standing right there. He put his head down to eat, and I put one in the back of his neck,” he said.

He didn’t see that one fall either, but when he went to check for blood, he found he’d cleanly killed them both.
