Brennan Barfield’s buck was in full velvet

Brennan Barfield of Bennettsville, SC killed an 8-point buck in Marlboro County on Aug. 10, 2024, which was South Carolina’s Youth Day in Game Zones 3&4. The buck was in full velvet and weighed about 180 pounds. The 9-year-old hunter shot the deer with a CVA 6.5 PRC from 180 yards away while sitting in an elevated stand at 7:45 p.m. The buck ran 20 yards before keeling over for good.

Barfield’s dad, Phillip Barfield, shares the details of the hunt here:

“We had been watching eight to 10 bucks on trail camera and glassing the bean field for the past month. There were several good bucks using the bean field on a regular basis. We had to move a stand to accommodate a south wind for the early season.

The only area we had to put a stand for this wind was about 200 yards from where the deer have been entering the field, but we did what was necessary. We put the stand up the weekend before Youth Day and trimmed out the stand in preparation for the hunt. Fast forward to August 10. We got in the stand around 6:30 p.m. for the evening hunt. A few storms came through the area a little earlier, so the temps had dropped a little and we had a nice little breeze going.

About 5 minutes after getting settled, several deer started entering the field, three were young rack bucks, and the rest were doe and yearlings. We watched them feed around for a while, then they exited the field. Around 7 p.m., deer started entering the field again. We had two mature bucks come out across the field about 200 yards. One was a big 7, and the other was a big 8. There were eight or 10 other young bucks and several does and yearlings.

The center of the field is raised, so all we could see were the neck and heads of the mature bucks. We sat and watched them feed for 20 to 30 minutes before they started filtering our way. The two mature bucks finally topped the hill in the field at 180 yards so we could see most of their bodies. Brennan got his CVA 6.5 PRC settled on the rest, and I watched it unfold through my binoculars. After the shot, the deer ran about 20 yards and fell over in the beans. After all the other deer left the field, we got down and made our way to his Youth Day buck and started the celebration!”
