9-point buck showed up bright and early

Waylon Hodge, 8-years-old from Ridgeway, SC, killed a 9-point buck on Oct. 11, 2023 in Fairfield County. It was the opening day of rifle season in that game zone, and the young hunter was ready for this buck. He had hunted it for a few weeks with his crossbow during archery season, but could not get a clean shot on it. He also kept constant watch on the deer through the use of trail cameras.

Hodge was hunting with his dad when the buck, which sported an inside spread of 14 5/8 inches, showed up bright and early. The young hunter began shaking, and shedding tears of excitement as he told his dad “it’s the big buck; that’s him.”

His dad calmed him down, telling him to get it together and to not miss. Hodge settled in with his gun, squeezed the trigger, and smoked him.
