When hunting on a hunt the morning of Nov. 2, and saw this buck for the first time chasing a doe at over 300 hundred yards to far with a muzzleloader, never had a picture of him at this point. My 9 year old son Owen plays baseball so finding time to hunt that week was impossible. On Nov 12 he made one pass by my camera chasing a doe finally having to proof to show family. On opening day rifle I sat alone as my son wanted to stay up to watch the Tyson fight, and decided to sleep in. I see a few small bucks and does and at 837 I look across the field 302yards and i thought it was a doe with the sun beaming into the thicket behind him hid his rack from eye sight. As I put binos on him I saw the split on his left g2 and knew it was him. I open the window and took am with my savage .270. Boom he mule kicked and ran off into the thicket.i called my wife who was still asleep and she knew instantly the reason for the call. I could hear her as opened woke my son up “did he get him did he get him??” Yes! My dude was pumped! I came home to pick them
Up before retrieving him to give him time to expire since I didn’t drop him.we met in the front yard high fiving eachother. As we are tracking him we find no blood, only chunks of meat on a tree. Heart sank knowing I hit him. I decided to walk in the woods 40 yards left of where he went in and found lying dead. Only started bleeding 5 yards from where he died, finally getting to put my hands on him!! Haven’t killed. A good bucks in years,as I get more enjoyment out of watching Owen shoot.we have a rule you can’t shoot anything smaller than what you already have. And for 3 years he’s bested himself every year first a small 7, then a great 8, last year with a heavy horned 9 point. I told him last year that one would be hard to beat. Little did I know he would have bested that one had he gotten up. But he told give me permission to shoot him. lol thankful we got to enjoy this day as a family
