Appalachian Holler Hunters

Joe Johnson of Appalachian Holler Hunters tagged out within nearly a week span during bow season in the Western NC mountains.
Avery County is the hit spot where Johnson harvested his two pristine bucks.
The first was harvested on Sept 10th, which was a massive mountain 10 point in full velvet. The bucks antlers were slightly palmated, as the area under his G2’s were nearly 3.5 inches in width.
The second buck Johnson harvested was on Sept 19 also in Avery County. The buck Joe tagged out on was a main fram 9 point with an array of kickers and trash around its bases. The deer “rough” scored about 140” which is a accomplishment of its own giving the food sources whitetails have in the mountain regions, with native plants consisting of mainly rhododendron an little other agriculture around.
Both bucks were a year after year process, as both deer Johnson has passed on the last several hunting seasons. A lot of time was spent to harvest these bucks, as Johnson worked around the clock to maintain a good habitat around his hunting property making access lanes, keeping his herd fed year round, and healthy by keeping a proper mineral site then into cutting his shooting lanes and properly brushing in a ground blind to the extent even a trained eye would struggle to find it by glancing.
Both buck harvests were a strategic plan of waiting till just the right time to know when to go in for the kill. Johnson kept a keen eye on his trail cameras watching these and many other deer trying to pattern the mature bucks. Johnson explained both harvests was a perfect storm as September’s usual rainy weather rolled in a rain storm the evening of both harvests causing a noticeable temperature drop, helping urge deer to their feet.
