7-year-old Orange County hunter capitalizes on youth day

Orange Counter youth hunter downed a mature 7-point buck

Cody Sykes, a 7-year-old Orange County hunter, took a mature buck on youth day. The heavy-beamed 7-pointer weighed in at nearly 200 pounds. Cody was hunting in a box stand with his father in hopes of getting an opportunity at a 150-inch, 10-pointer that they had several trail cam pictures of.

Jamie Sykes, Cody’s father, said they were aware of several mature bucks in the area. But they were really focusing on the 10. But when the mature 7-pointer — which was also on their hit list — showed up, Cody was sure that he wanted to take him.

The young hunter watched the buck make several scrapes and rub several trees for nearly twenty minutes. Then Cody got his opportunity for a close range shot. And he dropped the buck in his tracks.

“I was watching him come in for the shot and was really nervous. But I knew I had to take my time and make a good shot,” Cody said.

The youth hunter is no stranger to big buck encounters. He has been with his dad on several hunts and really enjoys hunting. He joined his father on a late December 2019 hunt and was able to see his dad harvest an Orange County buck that grossed 156″.
