Fish sets new pier record for sheepshead
March 5 was a great day for Seung Noh, who was enjoying a day off of work by fishing for sheepshead on the Mt. Pleasant Pier. Using one of the clams he’d gathered for bait, he caught the new sheepshead record for the pier with a 13-pound, 11-ounce monster.
The Mt. Pleasant pier is one of the most unique fishing piers in South Carolina. Rather than extend into the surf like most of the Palmetto State’s piers, it sits out into the relatively calm waters of the Charleston Harbor in the shadow of the Arther Ravenel Bridge. It’s also made of concrete, another unique feature among South Carolina’s piers.
Sheepshead are one of the most popular fish at the Mt. Pleasant Pier, as the fish constantly pick at the many barnacles that have built up on the pier’s supports over the years. Redfish, speckled trout, and flounder are three of the other popular species that anglers catch from this pier.
While Noh choose clams as his bait of choice, sheepshead are also fond of eating fiddler crabs, mussels, and shrimp. Anglers usually catch the big-toothed fish by fishing vertically and close to the pier’s supports.
