Sunday hunting legislation derailed by N.C. Senate

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina’s 140-year-old ban on hunting with guns on Sundays appears safe for another year or two.

A Senate judiciary committee on Tuesday debated repealing the Sunday hunting ban, which the panel’s chairman sidelined after hearing opposition.

Republican Sen. Fletcher Hartsell of Cabarrus County said the measure is unlikely to come back before a Thursday deadline, which means it is unlikely to be heard again until 2011.

Supporters argue the law is outdated and bars some people from hunting on what may be their only day off.

Opponents said keeping the Sunday hunting ban allows bird-watchers, hikers, and churchgoers to be free of danger from a hunter’s mistake.

North Carolina is one of 11 states that restrict Sunday hunting.
