Sportsman report on license requirements contained error

In its August 2009 issue, North Carolina Sportsman incorrectly reported the particulars of a bill that was passed this past spring by the state legislature and signed into law by the governor.

The magazine reported that House Bill 97 “provided that North Carolina residents who are full-time military or military reservists may hunt of fish in the state without having to purchase a fishing or hunting license.”

The legislation, signed into law by Gov. Beverly Perdue on May 13 and effective this past July 1, actually exempts state residents who are full-time members of the armed forces or reservists serving outside the state from hunting and fishing license (both freshwater and coastal) requirements while that person is on leave in North Carolina for 30 days or less.

The magazine regrets the error and any confusion it created among servicemen who are affected.
