A Raleigh man was the grand-prize winner at the 2007 Sportsman Fishing Schools, taking home a Triumph 190 Bay boat rigged with a 115-horsepower, 4-stroke Mercury outboard and EZ-Loader trailer for attending the North Carolina Sportsman Fishing School on March 17 in Raleigh.

James McLawhorn, a 45-year-old engineer with the state of North Carolina, was one of six finalists at the Raleigh school. Three more finalists were selected at the South Carolina Sportsman Fishing School in Columbia on March 31, with Lawhorn’s name drawn for the grand prize, which was valued at $22,000. A finalist was drawn for each 25 people who attended the schools.

“I was shocked and thrilled that I won the boat. I’ve never won anything before,” said McLawhorn. “I like to fish, and my cousin had been to the school last year in Greenville and really enjoyed it. He convinced me to go this year.”

Ty Conti, publisher of the magazines, said, “We are so thrilled to be able to give away a boat like this — with the help of Triumph, Mercury and EZ-Loader, plus all of our other sponsors who made the fishing schools possible and made it possible to give away this boat.”

The schools, which featured top freshwater and saltwater guides and pro fishermen leading seminars, drew more than 225. Sponsors included: Maps Unique, Optimum Baits, Sea Striker, Raleigh Parks and Recreation, Richland County Recreation Commission, IceWave, Star Rods, David Fritts Outdoors, Roffer’s Ocean Fishing Forecast System, Bob Redfern’s Outdoor Magazine, North Carolina Waterman, Foothills Marine, Palmetto Boat Center, Choplin Marine, Chatlee Boat and Marine, Charter Lakes Marine Insurance, Sportsman’s Warehouse and DOA Shrimp.
