Nominations Sought for S.C. Environmental Awareness Award

S.C. DNR is accepting nominations for the S.C. Environmental Awareness Award, which recognizes South Carolinians who are contributing toward the protection, conservation and improvement of South Carolina's natural resources.

Nominations will be accepted through Monday, Dec. 15 for an award to recognize South Carolinians who are doing extraordinary work for the natural environment.

Each year the public is invited to submit nominations that are then reviewed by an awards committee, which includes representatives from the state’s environmental and natural resource agencies. In judging nominees, the committee considers excellence in innovation, leadership and accomplishments that influence positive changes affecting the natural environment.

Members of the awards committee represent the S.C. Department of Natural Resources, S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control, S.C. Forestry Commission and S.C. Sea Grant Consortium.

Dr. Richard Porcher Jr., professor emeritus at The Citadel, won the 2007 S.C. Environmental Awareness Award. Porcher has spent a lifetime studying plants and plant communities in South Carolina, and has generously shared his findings with students in the classroom and in the field. He has numerous publications to his credit, and has worked with state and federal agencies, as well as private non-profit organizations, to share his knowledge of the environment.
