Licenses can now be purchased for 2012-13 hunting, fishing seasons

Sportsman can now purchase 2012-13 hunting and fishing licenses.

Since 1937, sportsmen across South Carolina have helped maintain and provide funding for the state’s wildlife and fisheries. If you’ve ever bought a license, gun, ammo, bow, arrows, fishing lure, rod, reel or even fueled your boat, you should pat yourself on the back because you’re supporting the S.C. Department of Natural Resources – to the tune of $172 million over the past 756 years.

The SCDNR wants to remind everyone that as of June 11, fishermen and hunters could renew their licenses for the 2012-13 season, and there are many ways to do so: online, in person or by visiting one of more than 500 licensing agents across the state.

Residents and nonresidents 16 or older must have a valid license to fish or hunt in South Carolina, and anyone born after June 30, 1979 must have successfully completed a hunter-education course to purchase a license. Those born after that date who would like to give hunting a try may use a one-time exemption and purchase an Apprentice Hunting license. Holders of those licences must be accompanied by a licensed, South Carolina hunter who is at least 21 years old and must stay “within a distance that enables uninterrupted, unaided, visual and oral communication with the apprentice hunter,” according to the regulations.

Don’t forget, freshwater fishing laws are changing effective July 1. The new regulations affect “creel, size and possession limits; definitions of water bodies and gear types and nongame devices allowed by location,” according the SCDNR. Visit www.dnr.sc.gov/fishregs/ for a complete list of the new regulations and how they may – or may not – affect you.
