“Fit to be Wild” will emphasize the physical side of hunting
Beginning next month, a television hunting show will debut featuring one North Carolina native and a number of sites throughout the Carolinas.
“Fit to be Wild” will make its first appearance on April 7 on Dish Networks’ Hunt Channel, 266. Its regular air time will be Mondays at 8:30 p.m.
Cara Christensen, a fitness model from Winston-Salem, and fitness model Amy France Helton, will co-host the show, which presents exciting hunting and fishing trips with an emphasis on the hard work that goes into physically preparing for the trips.
“You have to be in shape to do these things,” Christensen said. “When you’re going out, especially if you’re holding up a big crossbow or you have to pull it back 150 pounds, or when you’re reeling up a big 70-pound fish, or an alligator – all these things take so much muscle strength and stamina.”
Producers approached Christensen when another show she was to host did not work out and asked if she had an idea for a show.
“An executive producer came to me and said ‘Do you have a concept of your own?’” Christensen said. “I had had this whole show concept before this ever came about. Now, I’m directing and producing this amazing opportunity to inspire other females to get out and try something new and get outdoors and get active – and share it with someone you care about.”
For Christensen, that someone is childhood friend Helton, both of whom are newcomers to hunting. They are branching out from their fitness success to show women and men that exercise can be had in the wild as well as in the gym.
“You don’t have to go in a gym,” Christensen said. “You can go do plenty of things outdoors that are very active and connect you with nature.”
The two will also stress utilizing the meat from their hunts, whether by taking it home themselves or donating to organizations like Hunters for the Hungry. They will travel around the world to bring viewers any adventure that sounds fun, including hunts for alligator and water buffalo, but will stay close to home for shows filmed in Hatteras, Hertford County and Mocksville.
“I’m in it for the thrill. I love doing something that’s going to get your blood pumping,” Christensen said. “I really have enjoyed going out in nature and learning about other habitats and what happens when humans are among these creatures and how they react to it.”
