Hunter’s Education State Championship conducted near Ellerbe

Hunter education begins with instruction and then can be used for hunting or even competition

Yadkin County’s Forbush Red and Stanly County’s Park Ridge Sharpshooters won state championships on April 30 in the North Carolina Youth Hunter Skills Tournament at Millstone 4-H Center near Ellerbe.

Forbush Red won the Senior Division by a slim, 11-point margin over Stanly County’s Gray Stone Day, with North Davidson third. Park Ridge won the junior division by 35 points over South Davie Orange, with South Stanly third.

The overall individual championships were an “Efird sweep.” Lee Efird of Gray Stone Day was the overall Senior Division champion, and Shannon Efird of Park Ridge was the overall Junior Division champion.

The first-ever Fred Rorrer Trophy, named in memory of a longtime hunter educator who passed away last fall and recognizing sportsmanship among competitors, was won by Gray Stone Day.

Forbush Red didn’t finish first in any of the four disciplines – archery, shotgun, rimfire rifle or hunter skills – but it finished third in Hunter Skills, rimfire rifle and shotgun and finished with a total of 3,743 points. Park Ridge was the top overall team in archery and hunter skills and finished with 3,564 points.

Senior Division discipline winners were Gray Stone in archery and hunter skills, North Davidson in rifle and West Montgomery in shotgun. Junior Division discipline winners were: Park Ridge in archery and hunter skills, Farmville Middle Blue in rifle and South Davie Orange in shotgun.
