It’s worth the grind
When it comes to dove hunting, having a properly-prepared field to hunt is just as important as your aim. And that means more than just having a crop of sunflowers planted.
In Season 7, Episode 4 of Carolina ALL OUT, host Chris Douglas heads to Martin County, NC for a hunt. But first, he gets the lowdown on what makes a good dove field from Skip Valentine of Valentine Land, LLC.
After that, Douglas heads to the field and spots birds already flying. He resists the temptation to drop all his gear and start shooting, knowing it’s more important to find a good, comfortable spot to hide out from the birds and wait on that next flurry of activity.
He starts off like many hunters do after months of not shooting at a dove – he grazes a bird that goes down, jumps up and flies into the spread of bird shot from another hunter. But, also like many hunters do, he gets in a groove after a few shots, and grinds out a limit of doves.
“These little birds make a lot of afternoon fun for people like me. It’s not overly expensive, and you can have a really good time doing this,” he said.
