Myrtle Beach fishing report – May 2026

Myrtle Beach

Lots of good options this month

As the calendar turns to May, Capt. RC Ferdon of Harvest Moon Fishing Charters (843-485-7424) said several species of fish become more cooperative in the Myrtle Beach area. It’s one of his favorite months to fish.

“As we work through the spring transition, May becomes one of the best months for inshore fishing in South Carolina,” he said, noting that redfish, flounder and speckled trout are all in play.

He said this is probably the best month for catching all three species, known collectively as the inshore slam.

Get ‘em on top

The topwater bite is one of the most fun ways to catch fish, and Ferdon said it’s usually a great option in May.

“When water temperatures heat up, it turns on the topwater bite for reds and trout,” he said. “Trout are usually the early feeders, with redfish turning on after sunrise.”

Redfish

Ferdon and his clients are also catching redfish on mud minnows under a cork or on a Carolina rig, and they also have good luck with Berkley Gulp artificial lures.

Flounder

Flounder are a nice bycatch when focusing on redfish, but Ferdon also catches plenty when targeting them by slow-trolling mud minnows on single-hook trolling rigs. Artificial lures like Saltwater Assassins and Berkley Gulp are also effective.

Speckled trout

Live shrimp is a good option for speckled trout in the area this month, but Ferdon said his clients also catch their share on mud minnows and Saltwater Assassins.
