Marc Hamric, a researcher with North Carolina’s Marine Fisheries, died while helping a coworker during a day of collecting water samples in Turnagain Bay in Carteret County on Sept. 10, 2025.
According to reports from the Carteret County Sheriff’s Office and the NC Marine Patrol, Hamric and his coworkers were out of their boat to collect water samples when the boat apparently began drifting away. A coworker swam to the boat, but could not get inside it, so Hamric went to help. His waders began to fill with water, so he removed them and started swimming back to shore, but quickly went under the surface. His coworkers got him above the surface and began performing CPR. Soon after, paramedics arrived, but they were unable to save Hamric.
Hamric spent more than 20 years working for Marine Fisheries. Much of that time was spent gathering data for commercial fishery and field sampling programs, and maintaining boats and equipment.
