8-point buck showed up late
Kevin Mills of Locust, NC killed a Union County 8-point buck on Sept. 8, 2024. He shot the buck with a Killer Instinct crossbow from his tree stand 23 yards away.
It’s a deer he had a history with through trail camera photos. Mills got in the stand around 3:30 p.m., and shot the buck more than 4 hours later.
“I saw a fawn early, then a little while later, a doe with two fawns,” he said. “They left and it finally got to sunset. I looked up and there he was, walking into my lane.”
For a few moments, it appeared the buck might not give Mills a clean shot.
“He stopped and was acting wary, looking in front of him, which is my right, and he started stomping,” he said.
After saying a little prayer, Mills watched the deer take a few more steps.
“It wasn’t long before he calmed down and took his fatal few more steps,” he said. “I’m not sure what he saw that made him act funny, but the Good Lord calmed him down, and I made a perfect shot!”
