Fishing, wildlife-related workshops offered this month

Pechmann Center, Pisgah Center both offering free workshops

The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission’s John E. Pechmann Fishing Education Center is offering free workshops for people of all ages and skill levels in September. Online registration is required for the workshops, which are open on a first-come, first-served basis.

Sept. 7 – Fish Preparation and Cookery Workshop from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Open to ages 16 and older.

Sept. 10 – Intermediate Fly-Casting Workshop from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Open to ages 13 and older. Completion of the Beginning Fly-Fishing Workshop is required.

Sept. 11 – Soft Plastic Lure Making Workshop from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Open to all ages.

Sept. 17 – Pier Fishing Workshop from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Open to ages 15 and older.

Sept. 26 – Fly-tying Forum from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Open to ages 10 and older. Students 15 years old and under must be accompanied by an adult.

John E. Pechmann Fishing Education Center is in Fayetteville

The John E. Pechmann Fishing Education Center is located at 7489 Raeford Road in Fayetteville, across from Lake Rim. Commission staff at the Pechmann Center conducts fishing workshops, events and clinics throughout the year. Most programs are free and open to the public. The Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education is also offering several workshops this month

These workshops will all be held at the Pisgah Center, located at 1401 Fish Hatchery Road, Pisgah Forest, N.C.

Sept. 4 and Sept. 19 – Nature Nuts: Life Cycles from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Open to ages four to seven.

Sept. 4 and Sept. 19 – Eco Explorers: Stream Investigation from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Open to ages eight to 13.

Sept. 20 – Intro to Fly-Fishing from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Open to ages 12 and older.

Sept. 21 – Women’s Intro to Fly-Fishing from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Open to ages 12 and older.

Sept. 24 – Casting for Beginners: Level I from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Open to ages 12 and older.

Sept. 24 through Sept. 25 – Hunter Education Course from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. nightly. Open to all ages.

Sept. 28 – National Hunting and Fishing Day from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Open to all ages.

Sept. 30 – Backyard Birding by Ear: For Beginners from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Open to ages 10 and older.

The Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education is located near Brevard, just south of Asheville, by the Davidson River in Transylvania County. The center features nature trails and five large aquariums representing aquatic mountain habitats. The center is open from 8 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Monday through Saturday from April through November and then Monday through Friday from December through March.
