Antler scoring session, youth bass tournament, celebrities highlight annual event
The annual Palmetto Sportsmen’s Classic returns to Columbia next week for a three-day run of seminars, exhibits, celebrity appearances, an antler-scoring session and a youth bass tournament weigh-in.
The Classic is scheduled for March 22-24 at the state fairgrounds. Show hours are Friday, March 22, from noon-8 p.m., Saturday, March 23, from 9 a.m.-7 p.m.; and Sunday, March 24, from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Admission is $8 for adults and $7 for seniors and members of the military. Kids ages 10 and under are free, and parking at the fairgrounds is free.
The sponsoring S.C. Department of Natural Resources will hold an antler-scoring session all three days of the show, measuring bucks for inclusion in the state record book.
Also on display will be the Muzzy 200 Club Monster Buck Display, the 5,500-gallon Bass Tub and countless vendor exhibits.
Featured at this year’s Classic are R.J. Molinere and his son, J.Paul, from the History Channel’s popular show, Swamp People, recently crowned “Total Outdoorsman Challenge” winner Chad Weatherford of Loris, Joel Porter of Crown Creek Kennels, stone and wood carver William McKinney and reptile expert “Bwana Jim.”
Porter and Bwana Jim will lead seminars, along with turkey call maker Fred Cox, fishing guides Brad Taylor and Joey Mines, reptile expert Roark Ferguson and SCDNR alligator specialist Jay Butfiloski.
The Bass Federation of South Carolina will hold the weigh-in on March 23 for its first annual State Bass Fishing Tournament for middle-school, high-school and homeschool fishing teams. The weigh-in will be held in the Nutt Cattle Arena.
