North Carolina waterfowlers have new opportunities for permit hunts

Apply for your North Carolina permit-only waterfowl hunts before Oct 1.

Oct. 1 is deadline to apply for most hunts

With North Carolina’s waterfowl season right around the corner, now is the time for outdoorsmen to apply for permit waterfowl hunts. Oct 1 is the deadline for most of these hunts, and applications can be obtained from Wildlife Service Agents, online at the NC Wildlife website, or by calling (888) 248-6834 during normal business hours.

This season, the coastal region offers two new waterfowl hunting options. Thanks to the Wildlife Resource Commission’s Game Land Program, hunters have an additional tract of hunting land called the Texas Plantation Tract, which is located in Tyrrell County and governed by J. Morgan Futch Game Land. This adds six hunting blinds on waterfowl impoundments.

One of the blinds will be assigned to a Hunting Heritage Apprentice Permit holder. This blind will be open only to parties who have a minimum of one current Hunting Heritage Apprentice Permit holder, and who are partnered with a properly licensed hunter at least 18 years old. The other five blinds will be open to all waterfowl hunters.

Coastal ecoregion supervisor Tommy Hughes is excited about the new tract of land and the additional options it will give the state’s waterfowl hunters. “In addition to providing additional hunting opportunities, we are designating one of our waterfowl blinds for Hunting Heritage Apprentice Permit holder use only. We hope this will encourage a person who has never hunted waterfowl to partner with an experienced waterfowl to get exposed to this exciting, and many times addicting, hunting opportunity,” Hughes said.

Hunting dates and bag limits, as set forth by the N.C. Wildlife Resource Commission are listed below and are for reference only. For official information on the 2015-2016 waterfowl hunting seasons, visit www.ncwildlife.org.
