34-year-old died of gunshot wound

A South Carolina man was killed on April 5, 2023 while turkey hunting in Cliff Pitts Wildlife Management Area, according to the SCDNR and Laurens County Chief Deputy Coroner Patti Canupp.

The victim has been identified as Michael Calvin Keeler, Jr., 34-years-old from Waterloo, SC. Official said he died at the scene from a gunshot wound around 6 p.m.

Two people were hunting at the WMA when the shooting occurred. SCDNR officials said they are giving out no other information about the death because the agency is currently conducting an investigation of the event. They released the following statement on their social media channels:

“We are continuing to investigate a fatal hunting accident that took place on April 5 on Cliff Pitts Wildlife Management Area in Laurens County. A family lost a loved one and we urge against circulating false information.

Accurate information about this investigation will come directly from SCDNR. Follow our Twitter feed @SCDNR for verified information.”
