NWTF is about more than turkey hunting

Squirrel hunts, youth deer hunts, disabled hunts just a few of NWTF’s offering

Since turkey hunting season is a long ways off, there’s really no reason to see what’s happening with the NWTF right now. Perhaps they are shut down for the winter anyway, and will open back up in the spring? Far from it. The National Wild Turkey Federation is about more than just turkey hunting. Much more.

Sure, the organization started out as a group hoping to spread wild turkeys to areas of North America that didn’t have many, to educate the public on hunting the birds in a responsible way. But since their inception, they’ve grown into doing much more than that.

Besides a full banquet schedule, which gives outdoorsmen a chance to gather for some good food while raising money through auctions of outdoor-related goods and donated trips, the NWTF holds other activities of interest to folks who might have no desire to go turkey hunting.

In November, the NWTF is hosting a Mobility Impaired Deer Hunt in Aiken on the 4th at the Savannah River Site. This gives hunting opportunities to hunters with impairments that prevent them from moving about or sitting still for long periods of time, and gives them access to hunting stands built specifically for folks with such impairments.

A Women’s Mentored Deer Hunt is on the NWTF’s schedule for Nov. 5, and a Military Mentored Deer Hunt is being held on Nov. 11.

On Dec. 3, a Mentored Deer Hunt will give folks with little hunting experience a chance to get in the woods, and on Dec. 27, one of the more unique NWTF-sponsored hunts will take place with the Small Game Squirrel Hunt.

Jan. 1 brings the SC State Calling Championship to the Cabelas in Greenville, where turkey callers will meet to see who comes out on top.

In February, a Youth Waterfowl Hunt is on the 4th., and on April 14, a Wheelin’ Sportsmen Hunt and Benefit puts wheelchair-bound hunters in the spotlight.

This carries us right into the 2017 turkey hunting season, and don’t forget all the banquets held across the state every month.
